One of Nambian founding president Sam Nujoma’s bodyguards allegedly committed suicide in Windhoek during the early hours of Monday morning.

Sources close to the matter confirmed that the man identified as inspector Oscar Sisande (54), who allegedly shot himself in the head at around 03h30 at his rented residence at Soweto in Windhoek, was attached to the founding president’s office.

Namibian Police deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the alleged suicide stating that the motive is unknown and there was no suicide note left behind but police investigations into the matter continue. Shikwambi also confirmed that inspector Sisande was indeed a VIP police officer but could neither confirm nor deny whether he worked with the former president or not.

Sisande who worked for Nujoma for many years and also served at the State House on several stints during former president Hifikepunye Pohamba’s tenure, was at work over the weekend.

The office of the former President has been quarantined since last week after a guard succumbed to the novel coronavirus. The founding president contracted the potentially fatal virus and was hospitalised on 6 December. He has since been discharged. It is suspected that inspector Sisande could have contracted the virus at work which would explain the suicide.

When asked to comment, Nujoma’s personal assistant Paul Shipale referred the press to the police.
